Many years ago, and sometimes, I used to play the game civilization of Sid Meier. Many things I have learned how to civilized the organization to become strongest civilization in the age from this game. One of interesting subject is about the type of government. In this game, you can not jump into democratic governent. Why is that?
Because your people and infrastructure is not ready for that system. In the beginning, you must be a despot of your country, then by the time of life improvement, you can split it to monarchy system to get more strong and powerful civilization. Up to such a condition, you might change your goverment to be a republic. This will require more mature civilization of your country, otherwise you will face a riot and the worst case is a revolution. In this situation, your organization will be in chaos situation. Just when your civilization learn republic government, then it opens to 2 advance goverment type, i.e. comunism and democratic.
You see, this game almost correct in illustrating the way we develop our business. In the beginning, every leader or founder would take care everything by him/herself. Then by the time the organization grow up, the professional take place to set up a system that enable the organization meet the requirements of their customer and keep maintain and control the business, not by personal control, but by the system.
In my 15 years of experiences in operation management, I have to admit it’s true. I had tried to encourage the bottom line of the organization to be more involved in strategic decision and place them as a partner of management, just to find out it gives us more trouble. In spite of become our strategic partner, the bottom line fight back the management to the opposite direction. It’s just because the bottom are not ready to be the strategic partner for the management due to lack of skill, competence, experience and broad understanding of the business we are in.
I know, to speed up the company to grow up, I have to empower every individual of the company to actively participate in every business process to become a strategic partner of the management. But to be successful, I need to prepare the people in my organization to be qualified for that role.
