I have heard the question quite often, I even asked it myself for quite some time. Is it possible to run the organization without the manager? Is it possible to let people play they role without a supervision from the manager? As the matter of facts, people break the rule at anywhere at anytime with or without a supervision from the regulators. On the other side, many people can not pay their contribution due to limit of power, bureaucracy, authority, responsibility, and so on. In the second case, perhaps distribution the power to the people required more, but without a manager could be a big challenge for us still.

This is one of clasic questions about ISO 9000 certificate requirements, do we need to have ISO 9000 certification in order to improve our effectiveness in operation other than just fulfil requirements of our buyer?
During the training session for new supervisors, I raisep up the question of what is the biggest chalenge in playing supervisory role? And one of them said that he has not enough skill in operating the machineries in his area that could demotivate him in manage his operators because he was worry if one of his operators would asked him a question such as, “you (the supervisor) tell me to do this and that but can you show me how to do it better?”. That supervisor then asked me back, “what should I answer that question?”, and I replied him back, “what do you think you should?”, my supervisor said, “I have no idea, do you?.” And how can I answer that challenging question?
As a productivity specialist, your main role would not be just a system developer, but an agent of change who change the behaviour of the people within organization. To improve productivity of an organization, you must improve productivity of the people running the systems. And to make them more productive, you must change their behaviour. To change the behaviour, you must change their mindset first, that is why you will find dificulties because changing a mindset is like changing e person’s life. And i’ve seen many of productivity specialists fail due to this reason.
You might curious, who is Leon? I am pretty sure you’ve never heard of it before. Leon was the man who has changed Andrew Hernandez’ life to become the youngest vice president in his company at 34 years old. Both of them are the main character in Greg Blencoe’s book, the supermanager. You can read the ebook or download it for free. You will find out what was Leon has done to Andrew that help him reach that position.
It’s not the title of the Beatles’ song, that is what we, the certified productivity specialist, do in every organization we are in. As you know, the productivity is the ratio between output and input. Therefore it is simply said, to improve the productivity, we need to improve the output and reduce the input, but how?
Many years ago, I realize that one of my weaknesses is too reactive. I know that one of my improvable goals is to improve my active listening skill. I’ve read the 7 habits of Steven Covey quite often, and participated in the 7 habits training some years ago, but looks like it does not work well to me until last 3 days.
Many of you have heard this quote, but I believe not many of us understand it, and know how to deal with it. If we understand this, it would be more easy for us to accept the change. What have been worked well in the past, might not work today. What has become a leader years ago, now is just a follower. It’s all about the change. I see it happens in my company, every year, there must be a new requirements applied by our buyer. if we can not fulfil it, we will lose the business, but to apply it, we will face a problems from worker, the supplier, and all stakeholder of the organization. How can we handle this?
Many years ago, and sometimes, I used to play the game civilization of Sid Meier. Many things I have learned how to civilized the organization to become strongest civilization in the age from this game. One of interesting subject is about the type of government. In this game, you can not jump into democratic governent. Why is that?
Last week, just after posting the article about the secret of successful person that focus in every task he/she done and avoid multitasking, many response coming to challenge that argument. One of them said that many housewives do multitasking every weekdays morning successfully, such as feeding a baby while preparing the breakfast for the family, and at the same time help and assist another kids to brush his/her teeth. Another argument said that it might work for business and industrial issues but not in your daily life. Are you agree with that?
Absolutely you right, above is quoted from Steve Jobs. I love that quote as well as you, and believe it make sense and applicable by every leader in every organization. To be success, we must invest our time and energy in dealing with failures and mistakes we might made it in pursuing our goals. This time, I will share how the 10% of time and energy investment can influence and change people in my organization.
Several weeks ago, my staff told me that our inspector curious with what have done in our competitor just as same as what have been done in our factory. Every new method applied would be copied as is immediately. I’m not surprise, piracy is everywhere in every kind of business. And as the system developer, I am not worry with that, even it was adopted by our competitor because of the reasons below.
It was a sad story actually, but I think this will be good to learn from it. After the Airasia QZ8501 crash of last month that killing all 162 people on board, Indonesia’s transport ministry had suspended 61 domestic flight routes due to violance in flight permit based on the audit report that had been conducted after the accident. Pro’s and contra’s were following the decision where the contra’s mostly thought it’s not quite related to the accident. Are you agree with that?
In my experiences, I often found many failures in conducting the audit more on the hesitate or laziness of the auditor to verify their findings with the auditee. The reasons are vary as below:
Happy new year 2015, may you all blessed in prosperity and healthy. I believe, that is what we all want to have in life. To be prosper and health, you must ensure the ratio between your income and your cost is positive, and better than its previous condition time to time. This is productivity we are talking about.
If you want your organization become more productive, then, as a leader, you must make yourself more productive than other people in your organization. Below are the 6 things every leader should do and not do to become a productive leader.
If you are not expert in body language, you might confuse, who is the boss, when seeing someone speak dominantly to the other while the other keep listen. Most of the leader I observed, do much talking than necessary because they thought that one of the most role of the leader is just giving instruction and order to people. Though it is true, it is also cause ineffectiveness of his/her leadership role.
Have you ever have a boss who have a very strong knowledge about the business process and every aspect in the business but make you upset on the way he/she manage the organization, or perhaps you are the boss him/herself who has unreliable people around. If you have, then you must know that there was no more super hero in our world today. Yes, I’d like to tell you that superman was a long long time ago dead somewhere sometimes.
Some years ago, one of the popular journalist said that it is nice to be important but it is more important to be nice. I am quite sure you will agree with me, this is a good quote that still relevant today. However, in my field of profession, to be nice is not necessary required. Why was that?
As a boss of a company, organization, or even a small team, you might get annoyed when you must complete the work that your subordinate should did it for you. Or perhaps your supervisor get upset on you due to uncomplete job you should do for him/her. Yes, it happens every where every time in every organization. It’s not a fatal mistake actually but it could make you feel bad all day. And if this is usual happens in your organization, I bet your organization is very poor performed.
I remember have got the story about fresh fish. Despite the thrutness of the story, I like the idea behind it. This is the story about how to keep the fish fresh to eat. As you know, the japannese people has a strong culture in consuming fish. They can taste which fish coming from refrigerator or even pool with fish coming from the sea. Just storing fish in the water tank within the ship during fishery will not keep the fish fresh. Why? Because fish will swim slower inside the tank than in the see. What the fishery did was quite simple, they put a little shark inside the tank. Of course there will be some fish eaten by shark, but the other will swim as fast as they can to keep their alive and fresh as well.
One of the question I ask to the worker on the floor is who is the person you report to? And you will get surprise with the answer. Some said they don’t know, some said they report to Mr. A and sometimes to Mr. B. Furthermore, the person to whom they reported to was never realize that they were their superior. This is not funny, but it is real case I got. When I was looking at the organization structure, quite often I got the situation where people report to the person not defined in the organization structure, some due to expire and some due to the business process change.
What is this all about? I am quite sure that you think this is a funny question, but not for me, it still a question that need to be answer correctly. How to eat an elephant? One bite a time. This is a logical question need to be answered logically. What does it mean? It means when we can not get a thing done, then break it down at the size possible for you to achieve it. Most of the program fail or success due to this reason.
In my 15 years experiences, I have found out the reasons why the leader get fail or success in their role within his/her organization for every level and position. You all know what needed mostly from the leader, yes you right, the effective leader must influence his/her organization to cooperatively reach the goals of their organization. And you will agree, in achieving the success, there would be some failures, but the effective leader will pass it successfully if she/he has one value within him/herself. What the value is it?
I have seen system implemented in many organizations does not work as it should, though they are pass the requirements and get the certification from the auditor. You might not believe it but it happens. Why was that? Most of the audit focus on documentation only. They do field observation indeed, but most of them do not have sufficient knowledge on the business process of their auditee. therefore, the auditors will rely on the documentation and standard audit procedures.
