Many years ago, I realize that one of my weaknesses is too reactive. I know that one of my improvable goals is to improve my active listening skill. I’ve read the 7 habits of Steven Covey quite often, and participated in the 7 habits training some years ago, but looks like it does not work well to me until last 3 days.
I have started to pray in the mosque nearby my home since 4 months ago, it’s about 1 kilometer. I used to go there by car or motor bike. I’ve also started swimming every Sunday morning since last year. From both activities, I feel much better in some aspects of life, but not significantly reduce my reactive response in making decision.
Since two weeks ago, i’ve started using my daughter’s bike to go to mosque early in the morning, about 4:30 am every day. Though the gear is set for the light one, I was so tired in the beginning, and by the time, I feel it so easy. I remember, it’s quite often I sneezed during the pray, it was disturbing and sometimes embarasing, but it was never happen since using the bike. And surprisingly, my response can be controlled, not so reactive as it used to be.
I know, exercise can stimulate blood flow to our brain that make us feel more happy, positive and productive. And pray could help us more focus and calm our soul. Both combination would help us become more productive and positive.
When we relax, our reticular activating system (RAS) would open. On the other hand, when our RAS is off, our mind will be controlled by our concious mind only. Our concious mind is just as same as RAM (random access memory) in the computer, so it is limited. It works only based on the situation around us. Meanwile, all knowledge and experience has been saved in our unconcious mind, just like a hardisk in the computer, so the capacity it’s quite huge. When we use our concious mind only, the decision would be more reactive and emotional rather than pro-active and objective decision.
Both activity, exercise and pray (meditation) will keep our RAS open, it then make us more wise and accurate in making a strategic decision for ourselves or four our organization.
