Have you ever have a boss who have a very strong knowledge about the business process and every aspect in the business but make you upset on the way he/she manage the organization, or perhaps you are the boss him/herself who has unreliable people around. If you have, then you must know that there was no more super hero in our world today. Yes, I’d like to tell you that superman was a long long time ago dead somewhere sometimes.
My previous boss, with all my respect, have bought sugar, coffee and tea for his company by himself. It’s ridiculous, and I am not surprise knowing last year he got bankrupt. Though he has a very strong knowledge and passion in his business, but he has no respect and trust to his people and on the other hand his people lost respect and trust in him. They are afraid of him of course, but then people put everything on his shoulder. His people do not have initiative to solve daily problems and wait for his instruction and solution. In the beginning, he looks enjoy the situation, knowing people rely on him so much and obey what ever he said to them to do. But then most of the people become lack of responsibility on their own job and task. The morale and motivation of the people turn down to almost zero. It comes to the situation that he, as the boss of the company, can not control any more. And I believe even super hero could not save the company.
For people at my age, who was born 40 to 50 years ago, have raised up with the story about super hero. If you want to be success, then you must be the best of the best, you must know everything as much as possible, you must be a strong leader that has a very wide of authority. You must be number one of every thing, you must have high IQ. But it’s not working any more today.
Mark Babit, the CEO and founder at YouTern, tell us to encourage OPEN - an acronym for “Ordinary People | Extraordinary Network.”

OPEN means no single person, no matter what title appears on their business card, must have all the answers. Instead, we simply have to build relationships with people willing to work with us – employees from all areas of operations, customers, champions, detractors and sometimes even competitors – to find those answers. More often than not, that network-driven answer is far more powerful than one person could possibly come up with. In an OPEN circle, a good idea becomes great. And a great idea becomes magic.
Why is that? It is because the world today has changed by social media role, we are in Social Age now. Then the emotional intelligence or EQ will be strongly required much more than its cousin, the IQ, as we are very familiar with. It’s all about team work building. As the leader, you need to encourage, motivate and support your team to explore their potential and utilize it for the sake of your organization benefit, not only to certain of person.
I remember, in the first time of my role as chief of operation of my current company, I need to play the role of authoritative leader. People do not like it at all. By the time, with regular weekly training and continuous improvement program, my role slowly swift to a facilitator and put more responsibility on each person as it should be. Now, 2 years later, I enjoy more time in developing myself and my people for the future challenge. I have such a quality time with the love ones. And I can write and share my experiences at my own blog every week. It’s not because I am a super hero, but my team is.
