Many of you have heard this quote, but I believe not many of us understand it, and know how to deal with it. If we understand this, it would be more easy for us to accept the change. What have been worked well in the past, might not work today. What has become a leader years ago, now is just a follower. It’s all about the change. I see it happens in my company, every year, there must be a new requirements applied by our buyer. if we can not fulfil it, we will lose the business, but to apply it, we will face a problems from worker, the supplier, and all stakeholder of the organization. How can we handle this?
The first step is to understand the new requirements and what action to be taken to fulfil the requirements. This is the goal setting process. When we take action to achieve the goals, we must be ready for resistance. In this step, people do not aware the need for change (no communication/ feedback).
After quite sometimes, people will realizes with the changes. Feeling depression and frustration because it can be difficult to deal with new things. Time of realities, people aware that they must comes to terms with a new way of working. Defensive behavior can be minimized through constant reinforcement and follow-up. This second step is a very crucial step that you go through it, otherwise your people will go back to the old way/habit while the changes will still move on. This old way/habit would not be able to fulfil the new requirements. It just make your organization lose the opportunity to grow up, then you know what would be happen in the future.
If you successfully pass through the second step, people begin to let go of the past and look forward to the future. It is possible for optimistic feelings to emerge because the present anxieties are not worse as it first seemed. In this step people will look for a new idea/way/method from a new perspective. People will look at the situation with a different point of view.
And by the time, it would become a new habit. They now see the benefit of it and feel comfort with it. For the organization, it means that the new method or system take place and create result in a way to fulfill the requirements.
Resistance-Chaos-Positive Anxiety-Complacency, is the change cycle that happens to us whether we like it or not. Understand it, master it, then you will win the competition.
