I remember have got the story about fresh fish. Despite the thrutness of the story, I like the idea behind it. This is the story about how to keep the fish fresh to eat. As you know, the japannese people has a strong culture in consuming fish. They can taste which fish coming from refrigerator or even pool with fish coming from the sea. Just storing fish in the water tank within the ship during fishery will not keep the fish fresh. Why? Because fish will swim slower inside the tank than in the see. What the fishery did was quite simple, they put a little shark inside the tank. Of course there will be some fish eaten by shark, but the other will swim as fast as they can to keep their alive and fresh as well.
The moral of the story is quite the same with the life itself. We all need a shark in our life, not too big but small enough just to keep us move on. As in your organization, the little shark could be the auditor, or KPI (key performance indicator) system combine with your punish and reward system, or anything else to keep your organization continuously improved to strength the competitiveness of your organization in the market.
I have got the story myself, it’s very interesting to share with you. I was a consultant of the company I work for today. During the first year, I feel that I was a little shark of the company because the productivity program applied within the company. There is significant improvement ofcourse, but by the time, people get familiar with the system so they can adapt it.
About 6 month ago, our buyer hired a new inspector manager. What has been pass before become fail. I must change the inspection from AQL to 100% inspection to avoid fail in final inspection but the expectation become tighter, smaller room for allowance. It was moving on like this until the situation where our production quality better than our approval sample but the inspector still fail the inspection. After some protesting from my staffs, we communicate this situation to our buyer.
But the point we got in this situation, we just need 6 month to improve our production quality meet thair approval sample. Without that little shark (the new auditor), we might can achieve it in 1 or 2 years.
