Several weeks ago, my staff told me that our inspector curious with what have done in our competitor just as same as what have been done in our factory. Every new method applied would be copied as is immediately. I’m not surprise, piracy is everywhere in every kind of business. And as the system developer, I am not worry with that, even it was adopted by our competitor because of the reasons below.
It is a human nature to folow what become the best practice in other society. If you try to protect your system, your competitor will keep trying to steal it from you. If they can not get it, they will hijack your people. The worst case is your competitor will hijack your people who has master your system. If it is happen, then you will be in trouble.
To avoid those happen, I let it easy to copy by every one any time, and because of that I protect my key person keep stay with me. The question now is, when our competitor copy our system, will they successfully gain the benefit as yours?
The answer would be, probably they will. But I am quite sure they won’t, and that has been happen with our competitor.
The principle of the system might be the same, but the application would be different in every place. Each organization would have their unique culture that create different approach in applying one system. You might hear that the organization must have 2 system, one is the documented one, and another is what has been implemented on the floor. It should be the same. Yes, but when the organization just adopt it disregarding the organization culture, your organization would never able to apply it effectively. This happen every where.
My approach in implementing the system to my organization is very simple. I consider the culture, and most important thing, the people who will utilize the system. Rather than just copy the system, I adapt the system to be align with my organization culture. As the result, my people can apply every system effectively.
The best system is not how sophisticated the system is but how effective it is implemented in your organization.
