Absolutely you right, above is quoted from Steve Jobs. I love that quote as well as you, and believe it make sense and applicable by every leader in every organization. To be success, we must invest our time and energy in dealing with failures and mistakes we might made it in pursuing our goals. This time, I will share how the 10% of time and energy investment can influence and change people in my organization.
As the chief of operation of the organization, it is my responsibility to ensure the organization comply the requirements of the customer and regulations of the government. In order to achieve that, I need to establish a system that enable my organization control and maintain overall operation meet the requirements and the regulations. However, the system would not success if the people are not ready to apply it. What I have done is easily, I set extra 10% of my time , i.e. 4 hours a week, to train my people. Since I join with my the organization, i.e. 2 years ago, I never miss giving 4 hours training every week to my people in the organization except holiday.
In the beginning, I had to work overnight, 12 to 16 hours a day. I had to open my eyes on every single thing process and activity in the organization. And currently, I can work normally 8 hours a day, sometimes less. I regularly do plant tour 1 times a day or even once a week.
In the beginning, many conflicts and fight between people and my management team, and sometimes my management team with me. The labor union had organized demonstration to oust me from the organization about 2 years ago. And now, people are very happy to meet and talk to me. They can come enter my room any time because I apply open door policy. And the labor union, have asked me to have regular meeting with them every month, and they asked me to join the union and giving them the management training and coaching.
The productivity improved from 28.3% in year 2011 to 70.9% in year 2014. The labor cost decrease from 18.9% in year 2011 to 16.6% in year 2014 though the minimum wages increase from $130 in year 2011 to $250 in year 2014. The delivery on time improved from 79% in year 2011 to 99% in year 2014.
Look at the result, as Steve Jobs told us, it’s not the overnight success, it’s a long journey with a persistence.
