I have heard the question quite often, I even asked it myself for quite some time. Is it possible to run the organization without the manager? Is it possible to let people play they role without a supervision from the manager? As the matter of facts, people break the rule at anywhere at anytime with or without a supervision from the regulators. On the other side, many people can not pay their contribution due to limit of power, bureaucracy, authority, responsibility, and so on. In the second case, perhaps distribution the power to the people required more, but without a manager could be a big challenge for us still.
Many enterprises, such as Zappos, Medium, the David Allen Company, and hundreds more courageous and visionary organization worldwide have applied the holacracy model in their organization. This is the model of organization that put the leadership role in a individual as part of the function circle defined by itselves, therefore no manager role required.
Back to my situation, what would be happen if I apply this to my organization, will the operator proceed the work order as the SOP without a Supervisor, or Manager around? If the attainment rate so low, would they take any correction/corrective action? If they don’t, what would I supposed to do? do I need to replace them with other responsible person with no skill?
The weakness of our traditional concept of organization is uneffective managers that limit contribution involvement of the people within his/her organization. In the other word, that managers failed his/her leadership role.
The most difficult thing I need to do is to strengthen the leadership skill of the managers to enable their department perform in such a way that meet the company goals and expectation. What about yours? If you face the same situation, what will you do about it? Do you think the holacracy applicable at your organization? Please share.
