If you are not expert in body language, you might confuse, who is the boss, when seeing someone speak dominantly to the other while the other keep listen. Most of the leader I observed, do much talking than necessary because they thought that one of the most role of the leader is just giving instruction and order to people. Though it is true, it is also cause ineffectiveness of his/her leadership role.
As the leader, the most important role is making strategic decision for the whole organization in achieving the goals. To able making a strategic decision, you must understand the situation precisely. And to understand precisely, you must have the ability to listen actively and ask appropriate question to your people who responsible for the action will be taken.
Then, many leader fail mostly due to lack of the ability of listen, including myself some years ago.
It was a painful process to learn from your failure, but there is no other way around. So, the first thing I need to do is trying to change my behaviour to actively listen in order to understand what others feel and think. Slowly, my emphaty take over my selfishness. Soon after my emphaty take place, my curiosity increase. It enable me to ask appropriate question in getting deeply understanding of the situation. Once the undertanding take place, the idea of what need to do come to my mind. Then when it comes into a decision, people understand and pay respect on the decision, and most important thing, they feel quite fair to them and organization so that people get more responsible of the action plan. When the ownership of the action plan take place, the realization of the action plan would be effective and create excellent result.
To every leader, my suggestion is, listen first, ask more, and speak as necessary.
